Book description
The first book to cover the entirety of disability history, from pre-1492 to the present Disability is not only the story of someone we love or the story of whom we may become; rather it is undoubtedly the story of our nation. Covering the entirety of US history from pre-1492 to the present, A Disability History of the United States is the first book to place the experiences of disabled people at the center of the American narrative. In many ways, it's a familiar telling. In other ways, it is a radical repositioning of US history. By doing so, the book casts new light on familiar stories, such as slavery and immigration, while breaking ground about the ties between nativism and oralism in the late nineteenth century and the role of ableism in the development of democracy. A Disability History of the United States pulls from primary-source documents and social histories to retell US history through the eyes, words, and impressions of the people who lived it. As historian and disability scholar Nielsen argues, to understand disability history isn't to narrowly focus on a series of individual triumphs but rather to examine mass movements and pivotal daily events through the lens of varied experiences. Throughout the book, Nielsen deftly illustrates how concepts of disability have deeply shaped the American experience--from deciding who was allowed to immigrate to establishing labor laws and justifying slavery and gender discrimination. Included are absorbing--at times horrific--narratives of blinded slaves being thrown overboard and women being involuntarily sterilized, as well as triumphant accounts of disabled miners organizing strikes and disability rights activists picketing Washington. Engrossing and profound, A Disability History of the United States fundamentally reinterprets how we view our nation's past: from a stifling master narrative to a shared history that encompasses us all. About the Series Beacon Press's ReVisioning History series consists of accessibly written books by notable scholars that reconstruct and reinterpret US history from diverse perspectives.

Does just what it says it does, good value, and stable! Love the fact it can download from the web as well!

It's the perfect fit for my audiobook needs. It does everything I was looking for and more when I listen to books. I've been using it for a few years and it's one of the must haves when I switch apps to a new phone.

I have a number of audiobooks of various formats and ages, collected over decades. I digitized them all to use on mobile devices before iPhones even existed, but obviously now I’d rather not carry a separate device around with me. MP3 Audiobook Player to the rescue! This app lets me load books wirelessly, even via WebDAV, and has excellent usability features like playback speed. It can also be the target of a timer on iOS, so you can set a bedtime timer and automatically stop playback when desired. I just love it, and immediately bought the full version after I saw what it could do.

I reviewed and tested many audio book players before committing to one. This is the one, save yourself sometime and try it first. It has many features and does everything I need. It even integrates with the Bluetooth player in the car and lets me push the controls on the steering wheel to rewind by 15 seconds if I missed something. You can also load audio books directly from the internet (URL) from a zip file. It even looks great! Solid app for $5. Probably worth 4-5 times this.

The default music player doesn’t make it easy to add audio books from mp3, you can do it but it’s a pain in the but. This app makes it easy! I have been using it for years and I have been getting the updates for free! After my 1 time purchase. I like this app so much I deleted the music app and just have this.

It does everything I need: nice clean interface, many ways to transfer files including direct to iPhone, search function makes it easy to find your content, can change the speed of the audio (and it’s pre-EQ and sounds fantastic). Unlike some other apps it always keeps my place and doesn’t randomly restart from the beginning of the audio file. It does everything I need. Bravo!

Used a other app but it did not support all the audio formats and did not remember where I stoped, this app does 👍👍👍

Great app, I’ve used many different audiobook apps that start out good, but then things go wrong even after paying. I have high hopes for this app. The two main things that made me go Pro were the ability to easily add a book cover and the bookmark feature.

I love this app, especially the shake function to restart playing + timer, as I listen to audiobooks during the night, and with this function I’m not wide awake again if I want to continue listening after the timer stopped. The app makes it also super easy to import audiobooks 👍👍👍

So user friendly and helpful with the importing features. The small details like choosing covers and making sections makes it so good.

After having many problems with the built-in audiobook player that comes with Apple products I was so happy to find this application. Not only does it accept MP3 files it joins them together. I have experienced numerous problems where an MP4 book will play in iTunes but would not play in the app that comes with my iPhone. This application plays them all flawlessly. And the increased speed is perfect. As one who consumes 2 to 3 audiobooks a week this is just what I needed.
