City by Clifford D. Simak: Where Dogs Tell the Best Stories About Humanity's Exit Strategy
Picture this: humanity decides to skip town, leaving behind a bunch of chatty dogs, some helpful robots, and a legacy that's best described through campfire tales. No, it's not the setup for a particularly weird Reddit thread-it's Clifford D. Simak's "City," and it's absolutely brilliant.
This isn't your typical audiobook where someone just reads you a story. It's more like sitting around a fire while your very articulate dog regales you with family legends about how humans used to be important and then just... weren't anymore. The Webster family, apparently humanity's overachievers, not only built the spaceships that took everyone to the stars but also gave dogs the gift of gab and robots the gift of hands. Talk about a going-away present.
What makes this collection of interconnected stories truly special is how Simak uses these canine narrators to explore what happens when civilization takes its final bow. The dogs aren't just telling stories-they're preserving the mythology of their former masters with the kind of loyalty that only a species that never learned to check their phones could muster.
Three Hugos, a Nebula, and Grand Master status from the Science Fiction Writers of America don't just fall into any author's lap. Simak earned his accolades by crafting something that feels both whimsical and profound-like discovering your golden retriever has been secretly writing philosophy papers about human nature.
The audiobook format works beautifully here because these aren't just stories; they're oral traditions, legends passed down through generations of very literate canines. Listening feels intimate, like you've been invited to the ultimate storytelling session where the storytellers happen to have four legs and a much better understanding of humanity than we ever gave them credit for.
If you've ever wondered what dogs really think about us while we're at work, "City" might just be the answer-though it's probably more insightful than anything you'd expect from actual dog thoughts.
