Book description
Let's be honest: Cassandra Clare's City of Ashes is the literary equivalent of ordering a glittery latte at a coffee shop you've never been to. You're not sure what you're getting into, but the packaging is impossible to ignore. And honestly? It's exactly as chaotic as you'd expect from the woman who once wrote about Britney Spears' wardrobe malfunctions for a tabloid.
Clary Fray's life? A whirlwind of "normal" (read: demon-slaying, coma-ridden mothers, and suddenly seeing vampires). She's trying to navigate teenage angst while her new "brother" Jace delivers lines that sound like they were ripped from a bad romance novel written by a caffeinated teenager. The stakes? Higher than a vampire's ego. Someone's murdering Downworlder kids, the Soul-Sword's gone missing, and Jace's loyalty is about as stable as a teetering stack of glittery merch.
But here's the kicker: this is an audiobook. And that's where the magic (or maybe just the chaos) really hits. Clare's prose, which reads like a teenage girl's fever dream about Twilight meets Harry Potter, gets amplified when you hear it spoken aloud. Jace's "infuriatingly handsome" lines? They echo in your ear like a pop song you can't unhear. The dramatic pauses? Chef's kiss. You can practically hear the narrator's internal eye-roll as Clary questions why her life is "a bad fanfiction."
The book's flaws are so glaring they're practically neon. The "dangerous temptation" of power? Check. The "dark grip" of NYC's Downworld? Check. The fact that every character either wants to stab someone or sigh dramatically? Double check. But here's the thing: you'll keep listening. Because Clare's got a knack for making you root for characters who are mostly just really bad at communicating. Simon's growing affection? The "will they/won't they" with Jace? It's all so deliberately over-the-top it becomes fun.
And the audiobook? It leans into the absurdity. The narrator doesn't just read Clary's internal monologue-they perform it. You can hear the eye-roll in her voice when she says, "I just want my life back," while simultaneously being chased by a demon. It's like watching a reality show where everyone's wearing glitter and screaming about "soul-swords."
Don't get me wrong: City of Ashes is a mess. It's a messy, glittery, over-the-top, dangerously addictive mess. But that's the point. Clare's not writing high literature-she's writing the kind of book you'd binge while scrolling through TikTok at 2 a.m., convinced you're not a sucker for a good drama. And honestly? The audiobook version makes it even better. It's the literary equivalent of a perfectly bad rom-com: you know it's terrible, but you'll still laugh at the dialogue while pretending it's profound.
So grab your headphones, your favorite overpriced coffee, and prepare to be annoyed, entertained, and utterly convinced that Jace's "infuriating" charm is just the tip of the iceberg. Just don't ask for a "normal" life. You already know that's a lie. And the Soul-Sword? Yeah, it's probably just a prop. But hey, at least it's shiny.
