The book's premise is a classic blend of action, mystery, and romance. Nora is recruited into an elite band of raiders, the Jarls, and set on a mission to track down ancient artifacts that will unleash the nine worlds of the Vikings. That's a lot of "danger" in a single sentence, and it's only the beginning. When you add in the fact that the Norse gods have given her a mystical tattoo on her back, your stakes climb to a whole new level. You see her fighting for her life, and at the same time, wrestling with feelings for a boy who is also her arch-enemy. It's a good mix of the familiar and the fresh-fans of Divergent, The Hunger Games, or Cassandra Clare's books would find something to love here.
What makes the story shine is the way it keeps the momentum coming. Even when things get a little heavy-think "what's a kid's first taste of blood?"-the pace doesn't slow. Your ears get a lot of joy from a story that doesn't stall for too long.
The voice behind the narration (though I don't have a name to give it) delivers a strong, steady tone that matches the fierce spirit of the book. The words are vivid enough to keep you in the middle of the action, and the narrative thread remains clear as I followed the kids' quests and the strange world that surrounds them. I had to add a note: the book really does feel like a full-blown adventure, and it's a delight to hear.
In the end, City of Skies is a solid, fast-paced fantasy that promises more to come in the rest of the series. If you're looking for something that combines the grit of a dystopia with the grandeur of Viking lore, it's a perfect place to start.
