De manera repentina, la joven desaparece sin que el periodista se de cuenta.Esa misma tarde, el joven se entera de que encontraron el cadáver de una joven en la desembocadura del río, y que por la descripción le remite inmediatamente a la joven de las dos cartas...Robert William Chambers (1865 - 1933) nació en Brooklyn en el seno de una familia burguesa. Estudió en el New York Art Students League y en 1886 se mudó a París, donde convivió con el movimiento artístico bohemio, y donde expuso su obra en el salón de 1889. A su regreso a Nueva York, vendió ilustraciones a las principales revistas del momento.
