Book description
Imagine standing where ancient olive trees whisper Homer's tales, while undersea cables hum with today's internet. That's the breathtaking journey you take in Alex Christofi's Cypria, brilliantly read as an audiobook. This isn't just history-it's a living, breathing conversation across millennia, where the ghosts of Phoenician traders, Byzantine monks, and 1974 war refugees all speak in Christofi's vivid, lyrical voice.
You'll feel the salt wind at Cyprus's shores as he traces the island's soul-from goddesses and cyclops myths to the eerie silence of towns abandoned in 1974. His prose, described as "sensitive, witty, and beautifully rendered," becomes pure magic in audio form. You hear the weight of history in every pause, the irony of "the capital city divided in half," the humor in his reflections on being both traveler and returnee, like Odysseus himself. The audiobook makes you feel the clash of empires-Ottoman, British, Roman-while also catching the quiet, personal ache of identity.
What makes this audiobook extraordinary is how Christofi blends the epic with the intimate. You'll hear the rustle of linen in Ottoman markets, the echo in crusader castles, the chaotic energy of 1970s political battles, and even the absurdity of modern "Ayia Napa" holidays-all woven into a seamless, deeply human narrative. The Guardian called it "a brilliant exploration of cultural resilience," and listening, you understand why. It's not dry chronology; it's a love letter to a place that has endured, adapted, and refused to be erased.
Christofi's voice (if reading himself) carries the warmth of a storyteller sharing secrets by a fire. You lean in as he unpacks Cyprus's complex soul: how trade began with olive oil, how Christianity spread through Cypriot hands, how history was weaponized. The audiobook's pacing is perfect-slow enough to savor the poetry of a "lost kingdom of Alashiya," urgent enough to feel the tension of the "Battle of the Knife." And that ending? A haunting whisper about digging up the past, leaving you both satisfied and restless.
This isn't just a history of Cyprus. It's a reminder that every place has layers of stories, and that listening deeply-through the audiobook's intimate delivery-can make you feel you've stood at the very crossroads of the world. A masterpiece of sound and soul, Cypria lingers long after the last word.
