Okay, so I just finished listening to Daggerbound and wow, what a ride! T. Kingfisher (aka Ursula Vernon, which is pretty cool in itself) absolutely knocked this sequel out of the park.
The whole setup with the Dervish being trapped in a sword for 400 years is such a fun premise, and honestly? He's grumpy and sarcastic in the best way possible. You can't help but love him even when he's being completely unreasonable - which is basically always, but in a charming way.
The relationship between him and Learned Edmund is everything. Like, yes please to the sweet scholar who's just trying to do his job and ends up accidentally freeing this chaotic sword guy. The banter between them had me laughing out loud during my commute - definitely got some weird looks, but whatever, this audiobook is worth it.
What I really appreciated was how Kingfisher balanced all the action with genuine character development. Sure, there's dragons and cultists and all sorts of fantasy nonsense (the inhuman diplomats scene was particularly hilarious), but at its heart this is about two guys figuring out how to trust each other. Edmund's kindness really shines through the narration, and you can feel the Dervish slowly losing his mind falling for this wholesome nerd.
The audiobook narrator did a fantastic job with all the different voices too - everyone sounded distinct and perfectly matched their personalities.
If you liked the first book in the series, you're definitely going to love this one. And if you haven't read Swordheart yet, do yourself a favor and start there, but honestly, I'd recommend just diving in anyway because this fantasy romance is exactly what your TBR list needs.
