Book description
I've just finished the first audiobook in Ian C. Esslemont's Path to Ascendancy trilogy, Dancer's Lament, and I'm buzzing with excitement to share it with you. If you're a fan of the Malazan world, you'll know that Esslemont has been weaving its threads for decades, and here he gives us a fresh chapter that feels like a long-lost sibling of the epic saga.
Esslemont, who grew up in Winnipeg and later spent years in Southeast Asia and Japan, brings a historian's eye to this tale. He's been a creative-writing student, an archaeologist, and now a PhD candidate in English literature, all while living in Fairbanks. That mix of adventure, scholarship, and cold-weather grit shows up in the way he constructs the setting and characters. He's never been shy about setting a story on a continent that has been torn apart by endless wars, and Dancer's Lament delivers that with vivid, tangible detail.
The story opens in the city of Li Heng, a place that's been guided and guarded for centuries by the powerful sorceress known as the "Protectress." She has a cabal of five mage servants who have repelled the Quon Tali Iron Legions. It's a world where magic and politics collide, and the city's ruler, King Chulalorn the Third, is just beginning to reshape its destiny. The first half of the book feels like stepping into a living, breathing city where every corner has a story to tell.
Enter the two young protagonists. Dorin, a razor-sharp assassin on a quest to prove he's the best of his age, and a Dal Hon mage who seems to have a knack for staying one step ahead. Their rivalry is more than just skill; it's a clash of philosophies that drives the narrative forward. They find themselves thrown into the thick of Li Heng's politics and the Protectress's shadowy control, and the stakes rise faster than you can say "mystical war."
Then there's the looming threat from Itko Kan, the ambitious king from the south. He sends his own Nightblade assassins and hints at inhuman forces drawn from legend. The plot thickens with the emergence of monstrous, slathering beasts that appear out of nowhere, running howling through the streets-a visual that will stick with you long after the audiobook ends.
What makes this audiobook a pleasure to listen to is not just the plot but the way Esslemont builds atmosphere. He keeps you on edge with quick pacing during the assassin duels, while the more introspective scenes-especially those that explore the Protectress's rule-offer moments of calm that make the danger feel real. The characters are distinct: Dorin's brash determination, the Dal Hon mage's quiet defiance, and the heavy presence of the Protectress herself. Even though the world is vast, the story stays grounded in these individuals' experiences.
If you're into complex world-building combined with tight, character-driven storytelling, Dancer's Lament is a treat. It's a reminder that the Malazan universe can still surprise us with new, engaging narratives that feel like a natural extension of its history. The audiobook brings that world to life, and the narrator does a solid job conveying the urgency and mystery of each scene.
In short, I couldn't recommend this enough. Esslemont's new trilogy picks up where the old left off, and it does so with fresh energy and depth. If you've been waiting for a new adventure in the Malazan universe, this is the one to start with.
