Book description
I just finished the third chapter of Dead Man's Steel, and I'm still recovering from the emotional rollercoaster that Luke Scull's audiobook delivers. If you're wondering whether an epic fantasy can still feel fresh, this one proves you're wrong - it feels like a fireworks show in a world that's already blown up, all while you're politely listening to a narrator whose voice could convince you that the Fade is actually a very polite bureaucrat.
First, let's talk about the plot - it's the sort of tangled web that would make a committee of politicians blush. Sasha, a former rebel, and Davarus Cole, her comrade, try to keep the peace between warring mages in the City of Towers. Meanwhile, Davarus is sent south to the Shattered Realms to rally allies, and you think he'll just get a diplomatic meeting. Nope. He ends up wrestling with a godly essence inside him that could save or doom humanity, and each death that fuels it risks erasing his own soul. It's the kind of "inner demon" that makes you think the author is secretly in therapy with a mythic figure.
Then there's the Halfmage Eremul, who suddenly finds himself a VIP among Dorminia's new rulers because he's friends with a Fade officer. Classic case of "political patronage" with a side of eldritch terror. He sees humanity's fate and tries to use his mediocre magic against the Fade's high-tech wizardry. In short, he's a low-key hero who's basically a wobbly chess piece in a game of cosmic checkers. The audiobook's narrator keeps him moving fast, almost as if it's a reality-TV version of "Who Wants to Be a...?" where the questions are literally life-or-death.
And then Brodar Kayne, the legendary warrior in the frozen north, is racing against time to keep an ancient evil from breaking free. The ancient evil is older than humanity, older than the Fade, older than the gods, and it plans to drown the world in blood. Classic villain with a cosmic existential dread vibe that screams, "Don't forget your tax forms, folks." The narrator's voice rises with the tension, making it feel like a live broadcast from a doomed weather station.
All in all, Dead Man's Steel is a rollicking adventure that manages to mix high-fantasy spectacle with the kind of political satire you'd expect from a council meeting after a dragon attack. Scull's world is so big you could probably write a series of novels about it, but he keeps the pacing tight and the humor on point. The audiobook makes it feel like you're on the inside of a campfire story that's just been broadcast across a war-torn kingdom. If you're into epic fantasy that doesn't shy away from the absurdities of power and the weight of destiny, you'll want to add this to your playlist - it's loud, it's witty, and it's unapologetically chaotic.
