You hear it all: the coughing in the village, the frantic whispers of people who think she's a witch or a saint, the way she tries to be just a quiet student but ends up holding a dying child's hand.
What's brilliant isn't the time travel (though the Oxford details-like the bell-ringing during the epidemic, as the blurb mentions-are chef's kiss), but how Willis makes history feel like it's happening now. Kivrin's fear? Real. The villagers' terror? Raw. And that moment when she uses a simple modern remedy to ease a fever? It's not magic. It's just a human being, alone and scared, doing what she can. You feel her exhaustion, her loneliness, the way she clings to her Oxford textbooks like a lifeline.
I kept thinking about how Willis writes people, not just plots. The way the modern team frantically tries to pull her back while dealing with their own chaos-like the "illogical agenda" of organizing a bell-ringing session mid-epidemic-isn't just funny. It's true. We've all been that person trying to do something when everything's falling apart. And Kivrin? She's not a hero. She's just a girl who listens. She hears the old woman's prayers, the child's fevered rambling, and she answers. That's what made me cry, listening to this on my walk home-how ordinary courage, in the middle of darkness, becomes something holy.
