What's brilliant isn't the time travel (though the Oxford details-like the bell-ringing during the epidemic, as the blurb mentions-are chef's kiss), but how Willis makes history feel like it's happening now. Kivrin's fear? Real. The villagers' terror? Raw. And that moment when she uses a simple modern remedy to ease a fever? It's not magic. It's just a human being, alone and scared, doing what she can. You feel her exhaustion, her loneliness, the way she clings to her Oxford textbooks like a lifeline.
I kept thinking about how Willis writes people, not just plots.
