Book description
Davi's back, and she's not enjoying her new role as ruler. The time loop trapping her in a bloody, repetitive cycle of kingdom destruction? Still very much a thing. In this hilarious, razor-sharp sequel to How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying, Django Wexler delivers a follow-up that's even more brilliantly chaotic than its predecessor. Davi, now officially in charge, just wants peace-until Prince Johann's married life and Duke Aster's brutal governance shatter her plans. Enter the ancient magician, the restless armies, and the crushing weight of a curse she can't crack alone. The stakes? Utterly absurd, yet deeply engaging.
What makes this audiobook sing is Davi's voice-sarcastic, weary, and utterly unapologetic. The narrator nails her internal monologue, turning every frustrated sigh and witty retort into pure gold. You'll laugh at lines like, "I'd rather fight a dragon than explain my life choices to a smug prince," while simultaneously cheering as she outmaneuvers scheming nobles. The pacing is relentless, zipping from political intrigue to swordplay to existential dread with zero wasted breath. It's Lord of the Rings meets Groundhog Day, narrated by a gender-flipped Deadpool who's way too tired for this nonsense.
The praise from fellow authors isn't just hype-it's spot-on. Anthony Ryan's "darkly comic delight" perfectly captures the tone, while Max Gladstone's "twisty, pacey" description rings true as Davi navigates a labyrinth of lies. James L. Sutter's "swords-and-satire romp" is the best summary yet: this isn't just fantasy; it's a loving, hilarious takedown of the genre's clichés. You'll recognize every RPG trope being skewered, especially when Davi mutters, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em," while plotting her next move.
The audiobook's strength lies in its energy. Every scene crackles with tension and humor, amplified by a performance that makes you feel Davi's exhaustion and her fierce, stubborn hope. When she finally confronts the loop's origins, the payoff feels earned-not through grand speeches, but through the sheer, unrelenting relatability of her struggle. It's a rare sequel that feels both like a satisfying conclusion and a thrilling setup for more chaos. Wexler doesn't just break the loop; he breaks the mold of tired fantasy tropes, all while making you laugh until you snort. If you love smart, subversive humor with heart, this is your next obsession. And honestly? You'll be glad Davi's finally ruling-just not the way you expected.
