Let me get this straight - we've got a guy who's basically fantasy's equivalent of a straight-laced security guard, Mathaiik, whose entire career plan involves joining the magical equivalent of Rent-A-Cop Knights. His world's biggest worry? Ancient necromancers who supposedly got wiped out centuries ago. Cute.
Then Mother Nature decides to throw a tantrum, forests start eating people like they're at an all-you-can-eat buffet, and suddenly Math's career plan looks about as effective as a screen door on a submarine. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so what does our hero do? He wakes up a literal Grim Lord named Kaiataris - because apparently "call the exterminator" wasn't an option.
What unfolds is Jenn Lyons doing what she does best: taking fantasy tropes that seemed tired and making them sprint like they're late for dinner. This isn't just another "chosen one discovers dark magic" story - it's more like "chosen one accidentally unleashes ancient chaos and has to figure out how to put the genie back in the bottle, except the genie is sarcastic and has trust issues."
Lyons builds a world where history's biggest bad guys might actually be the good guys, and the real monsters are the friends we made along the way - specifically, friends who are enormous flesh-eating trees. The audiobook format really shines here, especially with voice actors who can handle Kaiataris's withering sarcasm and Math's growing panic as he realizes he's in way over his head.
The real delight is watching Math navigate being apprenticed to someone who could probably destroy him with a thought, while simultaneously trying to save the world from ecological horror. It's like watching someone try to defuse a bomb while arguing with it about whether it's actually a bomb or just misunderstood.
This standalone adventure delivers all the epic scope you'd expect from Lyons, minus the commitment issues of her longer series. Sometimes one necromancer is enough - especially when she's this entertaining.
