Hand of Evil - An Audiobook Review
J.A. Jance has done it again. In Hand of Evil she delivers a pulse-pounding suspense that feels fresh even to the seasoned fan of her Ali Reynolds series. The audio version brings the story to life with impeccable narration, turning each cliffhanger into an almost tangible experience.
From the very first page-well, first track-the tension is palpable. A man's hand is trapped in a car door as he's dragged along San Juan Road, and you can hear his desperate breath, the screech of tires, the wind over Phoenix's South Mountain Preserve. That opening scene sets the tone: Jance has crafted a "gripping" narrative that pulls listeners into a world where danger lurks around every corner.
Ali Reynolds is back, but she's no longer the carefree TV journalist we once knew. The loss of her job and her marriage have left her adrift, yet an unexpected meeting with an old benefactor throws her back into the investigative whirlpool. The plot thickens when a friend's teenage daughter disappears, and Ali dives headfirst into a mystery that spans generations. She discovers that two women-separated by time-share a single, terrifying secret. Jance masterfully weaves this "literary jigsaw puzzle" (as noted by The Tennessean) with the kind of meticulous detail that keeps you guessing until the final page.
What makes the audiobook shine is how the narrator captures the characters' emotions without overacting. You hear Ali's determination, her fear, and the subtle shifts in tone as she uncovers clues. The pacing is spot on; each chapter ends with a question that compels you to press play again.
Will Ali become another victim of the killers? Will the "deadly ring of secrets" close around her? The suspense is relentless, but Jance also gives us moments of quiet reflection-reminding us why we love this genre: the fight against unseen threats and the triumph of human resilience.
In sum, Hand of Evil is a masterful addition to the series that will satisfy long-time readers and entice newcomers alike. If you're looking for an audiobook that delivers heart-pounding suspense, complex characters, and a satisfying conclusion, this is the one to pick up.
