Book description
Here and Now and Then: A Father's Journey Through Time That Will Leave You Breathless
Mike Chen has crafted something extraordinary in "Here and Now and Then" - a time travel novel that uses its sci-fi premise to deliver raw, authentic human emotion that hits harder than any futuristic gadget or temporal paradox.
Kin Stewart isn't your typical action hero. He's a middle-aged IT worker struggling with marriage problems and teenage daughter issues - until his past as a 2142 time-traveling agent catches up with him, eighteen years overdue. Chen brilliantly contrasts the mundane frustrations of suburban life with the high-stakes world of temporal espionage, making both feel equally real and urgent.
What sets this audiobook apart is how Chen refuses to romanticize time travel. Instead of focusing on the cool mechanics, he explores the devastating cost of jumping through history - the memory loss, the disconnection from loved ones, the impossible choices between different versions of your life. The father-daughter relationship between Kin and Miranda becomes the emotional anchor that keeps this complex narrative grounded.
The audiobook format works perfectly for Chen's intimate storytelling style. You're not just reading about a father's desperate attempts to protect his family across time - you're experiencing his panic, his love, and his determination as if you're riding shotgun through every temporal jump.
Chen's background in geek culture shines through without overwhelming the story. This isn't a technical manual disguised as fiction; it's a heartfelt exploration of what it means to be present for the people you love, even when time itself is working against you.
"Here and Now and Then" succeeds because it understands that the best science fiction uses impossible scenarios to illuminate very real human truths. Every parent who's ever felt torn between responsibilities will find themselves in Kin's impossible position.
This isn't just worth listening to - it's essential listening for anyone who appreciates genre fiction that earns its emotional moments through genuine character development rather than plot contrivances.
