Book description
Hearing Sanah Ahsan's voice carry these poems is like finding a hidden altar in the quiet moments between breaths. This isn't just a book-it's a living prayer you feel in your bones. As Nikita Gill wrote, it's a masterpiece that changes you forever. And hearing it read aloud? It's electric. Ahsan's words, woven with Quranic echoes, childhood hip-hop beats, and the raw ache of queer Muslim identity, don't just land-they resonate.
You hear the tension in lines like "Who gets to be good in a society built on hierarchy?" not as questions, but as urgent, tender whispers pushing against walls we've been taught to build. The musicality critics praised? It's alive in the cadence of her voice, the way she pauses, how a single phrase rises like a hymn. When she writes of "reclaiming queer love as holy," you don't just read it-you feel it in the space between your own heartbeats.
This is liberation work, as Kaveh Akbar called it: a hand held out in the dark, saying, You are already enough. The blurbs from Mary Jean Chan and Pádraig Ó Tuama aren't exaggerating-the poems are a call to prayer, a rebellion against the binaries that cage us. And hearing it? It's intimate. Like being whispered secrets in a crowded room, making the chaos of being human feel sacred, not shameful.
You'll find yourself pausing the audiobook, not to absorb more, but to let the weight of a single line settle-like when Ahsan writes of "embracing each other's madnesses." It's not just about healing; it is healing, delivered in a voice that's both fierce and tender, like a mother's hand on your forehead. This isn't background noise. It's the sound of your own heart, finally, being asked to be holy. Press play. You've been waiting for this.
Effortlessly managing my audiobook library – this app's design is a triumph. The app is so well-designed. It’s clear the developers put a lot of thought into it. The narrator was good but spoke a bit too slowly for my taste. I had to speed it up to 1.2x which then made some parts sound slightly unnatural.
