Este libro es una reelaboración y ampliación de la 'biografía crítica' de Ludwig Mies van der Rohe publicada por Franz Schulze en 1985 (y traducida al español en 1986), que fue el primer estudio completo de este maestro de la arquitectura moderna. Con la incorporación como coautor de Edward Windhorst, esta segunda edición, totalmente revisada, presenta nuevas investigaciones y se apoya en los mejores trabajos recientes de estudiosos y críticos, tanto alemanes como norteamericanos.Los autores describen la trayectoria profesional de Mies desde su incorporación a la vanguardia moderna, con obras muy innovadoras pero de escala modesta, hasta su segunda etapa en los Estados Unidos, donde creó un nuevo lenguaje arquitectónico de una expresión estructural 'objetiva'. Entre las aportaciones de esta nueva edición está la transcripción del pleito sobre la casa Farnsworth, a comienzos de los años 1950, que desvela por primera vez los hechos del enfrentamiento entre Mies y su clienta.El texto ofrece nuevos datos sobre las relaciones de Mies con las mujeres, entre ellas la naturaleza y la ruptura de su matrimonio con la acomodada Ada Bruhn, sus estrechos vínculos profesionales y personales con la diseñadora Lilly Reich, y nuevos detalles extraídos de entrevistas con su compañera norteamericana, Lora Marx. Esta edición también da la palabra a docenas de arquitectos que conocieron y trabajaron con Mies, en buena parte gracias a la excepcional colección de 'historia oral' del departamento de arquitectura del Art Institute de Chicago. En esta completa biografía se narra la fascinante historia de cómo Mies (y sus alumnos y seguidores) crearon algunos de los edificios más significativos del siglo XX.Esta edición española cuenta con un prólogo del profesor Juan Calatrava, catedrático de Composición Arquitectónica en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Granada.
