Just finished listening to Aline Boucher Kaplan's "Khyren" and I'm still processing what an unexpected journey it was. The audiobook grabbed me from the very first moment - literally from the opening scene where Dara goes from a routine jog in suburbia to waking up under completely foreign stars.
What struck me most was how Kaplan doesn't hit you over the head with the feminist themes, yet they're woven so naturally into the fabric of this alien world. The narrator did a fantastic job bringing Dara's confusion and determination to life. You feel every moment of her disorientation as she's thrust into a society where women are valued only for their ability to bear children.
The world-building is fascinating without being overwhelming. Through Dara's eyes as she's trained as a servant, we gradually learn about Khyren's complex social structures - men fighting to maintain power while navigating intrigue, science, and superstition. The audiobook format really works in Kaplan's favor here, making the gradual revelations feel organic rather than info-dumpy.
I appreciated how Kaplan focuses on ordinary people responding to extraordinary circumstances. Dara isn't a super-powered heroine; she's someone trying to survive and find her place in an alien culture. The narrator captured this vulnerability perfectly, especially in the quieter moments when Dara has to set aside hopes of love to focus on survival.
It's a quick listen but stays with you afterward. Definitely worth your time if you're looking for something that blends thoughtful sci-fi with compelling character development.
