The narrator did a fantastic job bringing Dara's confusion and determination to life. You feel every moment of her disorientation as she's thrust into a society where women are valued only for their ability to bear children.
The world-building is fascinating without being overwhelming. Through Dara's eyes as she's trained as a servant, we gradually learn about Khyren's complex social structures - men fighting to maintain power while navigating intrigue, science, and superstition. The audiobook format really works in Kaplan's favor here, making the gradual revelations feel organic rather than info-dumpy.
I appreciated how Kaplan focuses on ordinary people responding to extraordinary circumstances. Dara isn't a super-powered heroine; she's someone trying to survive and find her place in an alien culture.
