I just finished listening to King of the Murgos and felt compelled to write you immediately. This audiobook grabbed me from the first chapter and didn't let go until the very end.
Garion's desperate search for his kidnapped son had me holding my breath more than once. The narrator brings such raw emotion to the father's anguish - you can practically hear the desperation in his voice when he speaks of Zandramas, that terrifying creature who's part woman, part dragon. The way the audio captures her dual nature is chilling, especially during the confrontation scenes.
What struck me most was how Eddings weaves together the personal and epic so seamlessly. Yes, we're following a grand quest across dangerous lands, but at its heart, this is a father's love story. The audiobook format really emphasizes this intimacy - there's something about hearing Garion's internal struggles voiced that makes his journey feel incredibly real.
The supporting characters come alive through the narration too. Each voice is distinct, from the wise old Beltirak to the fierce Queen Porenn. I found myself smiling during their banter and genuinely worried during the battle sequences.
I should mention - and this might be just me - but knowing about Eddings' complicated personal history added an unexpected layer to the story. There's something haunting about an author who could create such tender father-son relationships given his own circumstances. Though perhaps that's reading too much into it.
The pacing is excellent for audio. Never once did I feel the urge to skip ahead or check my phone. At roughly twelve hours, it's a commitment, but one that pays off completely.
If you enjoyed the first book, Pawn of Prophecy, you'll love this continuation. And if you're new to the series, the audiobook is actually a great entry point - sometimes hearing the world unfold can be more immersive than reading it.
