Book description
Legend by David Gemmell: A Grumpy Old Man's Last Stand
Let me get this straight - we're supposed to believe that David Gemmell sat down and thought, "You know what fantasy needs? A six-walled fortress and a protagonist who's basically retired but not really." And somehow this resulted in a book that sold over a million copies. Colour me skeptical, but also oddly convinced.
Enter Druss, everyone's favourite grizzled warrior who's apparently tired of being famous and wealthy, so he's off to his mountain lair to brood dramatically about death. Because apparently retirement homes weren't medieval enough. The man literally has a fortress named after him, yet he chooses mountain exile. Priorities, people.
Then along come the Nadir barbarians, because every fantasy novel needs some barbarians, and suddenly our protagonist has to reluctantly emerge from retirement. How original. Next, you'll tell me he has to prove he can still live up to his own legend. Groundbreaking stuff here, folks.
But here's the thing - Gemmell somehow makes this tired formula work with what can only be described as literary elbow grease and a healthy disregard for subtlety. The man writes violence like other authors write love scenes, which is either impressive or concerning, depending on your perspective.
For those keeping score at home, this is heroic fantasy that's heavy on the heroics and light on the character development that doesn't involve grunting meaningfully. It's like if Conan the Barbarian had a midlife crisis and decided to get nostalgic about his own legend.
The audiobook format actually works surprisingly well here, probably because listening to someone dramatically narrate Druss's internal monologues about mortality is less painful than reading them. Plus, any narrator worth their salt can make even the most predictable plot twists sound like revelations.
Look, if you want a fantasy novel that delivers exactly what it promises - which is to say, absolutely nothing surprising - then Legend is your book. It's the literary equivalent of comfort food: predictable, filling, and occasionally satisfying in its complete lack of nutritional value.
Gemmell's debut may be considered a classic, but classics aren't always good - they're just old and influential. This one influenced a lot of very similar books featuring very similar grumpy warriors with very similar midlife crises.
But hey, at least Druss gets to swing his axe dramatically one last time. In a world full of complicated anti-heroes and morally ambiguous protagonists, sometimes you just want a guy who's clearly the good guy being really good at violence. It's oddly refreshing, in a "I can't believe this actually works" kind of way.
Just don't expect any plot twists that haven't been successfully predicted by ancient oracles.
