Legend Born - Audiobook Review
If you're looking for a YA fantasy that feels like a fresh, modern myth, Legend Born by Tracy Deonn is the soundtrack of your next listening adventure. From the first crackle of the narrator's voice, you're pulled into Bree Matthews' world-a blend of Southern grit and Black-girl magic that feels both familiar and astonishingly new.
The story kicks off with a heart-wrenching loss: Bree's mother dies in an accident, leaving her numb and eager to escape her past. The campus at UNC-Chapel Hill becomes the perfect backdrop for an unexpected encounter-a flying demon, a secret society of "Legendborn" who hunt these creatures, and a teenage mage who calls himself Merlin. When his attempt to erase Bree's memories fails, it unlocks something deeper: Bree's own latent powers and a buried truth about her mother's death that ties back to a past Merlin.
What makes this audiobook so engaging is the way Deonn weaves myth into modern life. The legend of King Arthur isn't just a backdrop; it's reimagined through Southern folklore and Black-girl agency, creating a tapestry that feels both epic and intimate. Bree's journey-balancing grief, power, and self-discovery-is narrated with a voice that captures her emotional highs and lows, making every twist feel personal.
The chemistry between Bree and Nick (the self-exiled Legendborn) is palpable. Their reluctant partnership escalates into something deeper as they uncover the society's secrets. The narrator does an excellent job distinguishing their voices, allowing listeners to feel the tension and growing connection without losing the story's momentum.
Audiobook listeners will appreciate the clear pacing and energetic delivery that keeps the stakes high: a looming magical war and Bree's dilemma-whether to dismantle or join the Legendborn. The ending leaves you on the edge of your seat, ready for Bloodmarked, while the teaser and exclusive short story add an extra layer of intrigue.
In sum, Legend Born is a masterful blend of myth, mystery, and modern relevance. Its audiobook version amplifies that experience with dynamic narration and a compelling storyline. Whether you're a longtime fan of YA fantasy or new to the genre, this is one listen that will leave you humming for more.
