Book description
Picture London 1944: sirens wail, bombers hover, but inside Rainbow Corner, the music swells. Celia Imrie's Meet Me at Rainbow Corner doesn't just tell a story-it dances through your ears in this utterly captivating audiobook. You can practically hear Dot Gallagher's Red Cross cape swirl as she steps into that wartime oasis, where American GIs swap war stories for salsa steps and the air hums with hope.
Imrie's prose, already vivid on the page, becomes pure magic when voiced. The narrator masterfully captures that infectious rhythm-the clapping hands, clicking fingers, the way laughter cuts through the fear. It's impossible not to sway along. Dot's arrival from Liverpool, her instant connection with the spirited Lilly, and their journey through bomb shelters and ballrooms feels so real, so alive, you forget you're listening to an audiobook. You're there, smelling the cigarette smoke, feeling the bass thump through the floorboards.
And the praise? It's not just hype. As Jenny Ashcroft declared, you'll be utterly captivated from first page to last-and this audiobook makes that immersion deeper. Rosie Goodwin's "meticulously researched" detail shines: the sharp crack of a soldier's boot, the hushed whispers in a Piccadilly alley, the way a simple dance becomes defiance. Joanna Lumley's "utterly charming" description? Spot on. This isn't just a wartime romance; it's a love letter to the women who found joy despite the chaos-their courage, their secrets, their fierce, unbreakable friendships.
Fiona Valpy nails it: it's a "deeply evocative snapshot" of women who became "GI Brides," but it's so much more. It's about finding your rhythm when the world is shaking. Dot and Lilly's bond-forged in air raid shelters and shared laughter-makes every tender moment land with quiet power. You'll laugh with them, ache with them, and then, heart full, realize what Imrie's truly given us: a reminder that even in the darkest nights, love and music are the bravest things we can carry.
This audiobook doesn't just recount history-it makes you feel it pulse. So press play, let the rhythm take you, and discover why readers (and reviewers) are calling it "simply didn't want it to end." You won't just hear this story; you'll carry its light long after the final note fades.
