Book description
You know how most fantasy series take three books to warm up? Steven Erikson apparently didn't get that memo. With Memories of Ice, he just drops a mountain on the genre and dares it to move. As an audiobook, it's a glorious, chaotic ordeal. The narrator must have needed a flowchart the size of a cathedral tapestry just to keep track of the voices.
Let's talk about the "uneasy alliance." That's the understatement of the millennium. You've got ancient, brooding elves who are literally thousands of years old, a warlord who might be a god, and an army of regular-ish soldiers who probably just want a pension, all forced to team up against a tide of... what was it? "Corrupted blood." Of course. Because a regular invading army just isn't daunting enough. The new villain, the Pannion Domin, is so generically evil it's almost a parody of epic fantasy's obsession with world-ending threats. It seethes. It devours. It's basically a sentient landfill with a god complex.
And just when you think the cast is bloated enough, Erikson, with a straight face, introduces the T'lan Imass. Because what this story of gods, mages, and immortal elves really needed was an army of undead neanderthals. The narrator's solemn, gravelly voice for these characters is a masterpiece of audio comedy. You can almost hear the sigh every time a new clan is announced.
The real joke, the peak of fantasy absurdity, is the underlying threat. The big bad behind the big bad? The Crippled God. Not a "Wounded Deity" or an "Injured Almighty." The Crippled God. He's unchained and intent on revenge, which presumably involves a lot of paperwork for disability claims while he lays waste to continents. The sheer, unadulterated scale of it all is so preposterous that you can't help but admire the audacity. Listening to this is like being shouted at by a very intelligent, very serious friend describing the most complicated dream you've ever heard.
It's a mess. A magnificent, overwhelming, brilliantly written mess. You'll spend half the time lost and the other half wondering why you're enjoying it so much. It's less an audiobook and more an anthropologic dig through the layers of fantasy's own excesses. And honestly? I wouldn't have it any other way.
