Book description
Imagine this: you're cozied up for Christmas, a snowstorm howling outside, and suddenly you're not just listening to a murder mystery - you're playing it. Martin Edwards' Miss Winter in the Library with a Knife is pure, brilliant fun, especially as an audiobook. Richard Osman nails it: Edwards is a "true master of British crime writing," and this book proves why. It's the perfect festive escape - Ian Moore's spot-on "all the entertainment you'll need this Christmas. Wonderful stuff."
Here's the hook: six crime writers, meticulously chosen by the enigmatic Midwinter Trust, are locked in a remote Yorkshire village for a very specific game. Solve the fictional murder of a crime writer, win a life-changing prize... but with the village cut off by snow and a killer among them, "playing fair isn't on everyone's Christmas list." The twist? You, the listener, get to hunt the clues alongside the characters. The audiobook makes this immersive magic. You hear the creak of the old library, the tension in whispered conversations, and the subtle clues woven into the narrator's voice - it's like having a detective's notebook in your ear. Alex Pavesi, the "king of the puzzle mystery novel," wouldn't be wrong to call this "fiendish, hilarious and utterly addictive" - it genuinely is.
Orlando Murrin's description hits the mark: the way Edwards builds the classic, cozy-but-suspicious setting (think snow-laden cottages, roaring fires, hidden agendas) and then injects that delicious, modern twist - the game is the murder - is masterful. You'll find yourself pausing the audiobook, rewinding to catch that tiny detail the narrator slipped in about the library's rare first edition, just like you'd do with a physical clue. It's not just a story; it's a game you live through the audio. As SJ Bennett says, it's simply "what a treat," and Mary Grandis's "I absolutely loved it" is the feeling you'll have too.
This isn't just another cozy mystery; it's the perfect blend of traditional charm and clever, interactive fun. Edwards, a veteran of the genre, knows exactly how to make you feel clever while keeping you guessing. The audiobook format? It's essential. You hear the snow, the tension, the clues, making you feel part of the locked room. It's the ultimate festive brain-teaser, warm, witty, and utterly compelling from the first word to the final, satisfying deduction. Grab it, press play, and solve the mystery yourself - you'll be hooked.
