Nothing Short of Dying - Audiobook Review
Erik Storey's Nothing Short of Dying turns the familiar "ex-mercenary on a mission" trope into an adrenaline-packed, atmospheric adventure that feels fresh every time you press play. The narrator-an experienced voice with a steady, gritty cadence-captures Clyde Barr's world-worn grit while still letting moments of tenderness slip through. That balance keeps listeners hooked from the first line.
The story follows Clyde, a 16-year-old wanderer who has lived off the grid for years, now drawn back into Colorado's rugged wilderness when his sister Jen calls in a desperate plea. The stakes are high: a meth kingpin, a ticking clock, and a past that refuses to stay buried. Storey throws us straight into the heat of it all, with vivid descriptions of alpine deserts and craggy peaks that feel almost tactile. The narration makes those landscapes pop-each creak of a pine, each gust of wind feels real.
Clyde isn't alone in this race; he partners with Allie, a young woman whose motives are layered and compelling. Their dynamic adds depth to the action: Allie pushes Clyde to confront his past and himself, while Clyde's raw experience guides them through danger. This interplay keeps the pace brisk without sacrificing character development.
What truly sets this audiobook apart is Storey's ability to blend high-octane suspense with quiet moments of reflection. Even as the plot accelerates-every page a new twist or chase-the narrator doesn't rush; instead, she lets each scene breathe, letting listeners feel the weight of Clyde's decisions and the urgency of his mission.
Praise from well-known authors like Jeffery Deaver ("nothing short of brilliant") is mirrored in this listening experience. The audiobook grips you from the first word and never lets go, making it a perfect pick for fans of Lee Child's Jack Reacher or anyone who enjoys a relentless thriller with heart.
If you're looking for an audiobook that delivers pulse-pounding action, rich setting, and genuine character arcs, Nothing Short of Dying will not disappoint. The narration elevates the narrative, turning each chapter into an immersive adventure that lingers long after the final track ends.
