This audiobook delivers exactly what you'd expect from a story about a traumatized robot who's spent four decades perfecting the art of emotional shutdown: namely, watching said robot slowly realize that isolation is just loneliness with better WiFi.
Be, our delightfully neurotic protagonist, has been hiding in an abandoned mill like a mechanical Howard Hughes, which honestly sounds more peaceful than most people's weekends. But when someone steals their leg-a theft that's either deeply personal or the universe's cruelest practical joke-Be must embark on a quest that forces them to interact with things called "other people." The horror.
What follows is part mystery, part therapy session, and part existential crisis wrapped in a post-apocalyptic bow. Be's journey from "I'm fine, leave me alone" to "okay, fine, I'll save the world again, but I'm not happy about it" hits all the familiar beats of reluctant hero narratives, but Palmer's wit keeps the proceedings from feeling too recycled.
The audiobook format works surprisingly well here, particularly in capturing Be's internal monologue-that particular brand of robotic self-pity that somehow manages to be both endearing and insufferable. You'll find yourself simultaneously rooting for Be's emotional growth and wondering if anyone considered just letting them rot in that mill forever.
The supporting cast of a cyborg dog and human mechanic provide enough comic relief to prevent the whole enterprise from collapsing under its own philosophical weight, though barely. By the end, even the most jaded listener will find themselves weirdly invested in whether Be can achieve wholeness in a world that's only half-functional.
