Be, our delightfully neurotic protagonist, has been hiding in an abandoned mill like a mechanical Howard Hughes, which honestly sounds more peaceful than most people's weekends. But when someone steals their leg-a theft that's either deeply personal or the universe's cruelest practical joke-Be must embark on a quest that forces them to interact with things called "other people." The horror.
What follows is part mystery, part therapy session, and part existential crisis wrapped in a post-apocalyptic bow. Be's journey from "I'm fine, leave me alone" to "okay, fine, I'll save the world again, but I'm not happy about it" hits all the familiar beats of reluctant hero narratives, but Palmer's wit keeps the proceedings from feeling too recycled.
