Okay, so I just finished listening to Pantomime and wow - this audiobook completely swept me away!
The story follows Gene, who's basically living this privileged life but hiding this huge secret - she's intersex in a world where that kind of thing could get her in serious trouble. When her magical abilities start showing up (and apparently they're connected to some ancient, forgotten race), things go from bad to worse. Her parents basically sell her out, so she does the only thing that makes sense - ditches everything and runs away to join the circus.
Here's where it gets really good. Gene reinvents herself as Micah Grey and becomes an aerialist, which sounds absolutely magical to listen to. The narrator does such an amazing job bringing that sense of freedom and flight to life. But (and you knew there was a but coming, right?), the circus isn't all glitter and wonder. There's definitely some dark stuff going on, and Micah keeps getting these visions about some ancient storm that's literally waking up from the past.
What really hooked me was how fresh the whole intersex protagonist thing felt. I don't think I've ever encountered a character quite like Gene/Micah before, and the way L.R. Lam handles it feels respectful and genuine. Plus, the world-building is fantastic - this lost civilization with their glowing glass relics is so intriguing.
The pacing kept me engaged throughout, and I found myself genuinely worried about what was going to happen to Micah. There's political intrigue, family betrayal, found family dynamics, and just enough mystery to keep you guessing.
Definitely worth a listen if you're into fantasy that's a little different from the usual fare. I'm already curious about the rest of the series!
