Book description
Okay, so I just finished the audiobook for Problematic Summer Romance (and honestly, that title is perfect because it's SO true), and I need to tell you: this is the exact kind of cozy, messy, deliciously tension-filled romance I didn't know I needed. Ali Hazelwood is basically the queen of making you swoon while simultaneously yelling "NOPE, THAT'S A BAD IDEA!" at your phone.
Let's be real: Maya (23, figuring out life, struggling grad student) and Conor (38, super successful, way too old for her, her brother's best friend) are the definition of a "problematic" pairing. And yeah, he's told her to move on, to get over him. But then her brother's wedding happens in Taormina, Sicily, and suddenly, they're trapped together in this gorgeous villa for a week. Cue the ancient ruins, the amazing food, the stunning Ionian coast... and the fact that Conor is definitely hiding something.
The audiobook? Absolute magic. The narrator (I'm pretty sure it's the same one as Deep End, and wow, she's got that perfect mix of playful and warm) makes you feel like you're right there. You can hear the waves crashing, the clink of wine glasses, and the tension in every conversation between Maya and Conor. You feel her heart racing when he's near, the way she tries to convince herself it's just a fling, but you know it's way more. And Conor? His voice in the audiobook is so layered - all that quiet intensity, the regret, the obvious pull he's fighting. It's impossible not to feel the chemistry crackling through the speakers.
What I loved most? Hazelwood doesn't just play the trope; she twists it. The "older man, younger woman" thing? Yeah, it's there, but it's not just that. There's so much more going on with Conor, and the audiobook makes those little reveals land perfectly. You're sitting there, listening to Maya figure it out, and you're just nodding along, feeling that "ohhhhh" moment. And the setting! The Italian countryside, the wedding chaos, the little moments of connection over gelato or walking by the sea - the narrator makes it feel alive, like you're soaking up the sun while listening.
It's got that sweet, slow-burn feeling, but with enough delicious tension to keep you hooked. You're not sure if this is going to end in a happy place or a total disaster (and honestly, the "problematic" part is so real), but you're so invested in finding out. The audiobook version makes it feel like a perfect summer afternoon spent listening to a friend tell you the best, most complicated story ever. It's the kind of listen that makes you forget where you are, just completely absorbed in the romance, the setting, and the slow, delicious build of something that shouldn't work but absolutely, undeniably, does. If you love romance that's smart, sexy, and makes you laugh while your heart's doing backflips? This audiobook is your new obsession. Trust me.
