Olana is a twelve-year-old girl who has just been cured from sickle cell disease, a blood disorder that affects the red blood cell. Twelve years ago, Olana was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease. After multiple complications due to this condition, she underwent a bone marrow transplant, curing her from sickle cell disease. This news was celebrated by her whole extended family. After all these years, Olana decided to tell her story through different tales. This is the first tale of many tales Olana wants to share with her friends and family. Olana wants you to know that she is writing more tales which will be released in due course. For now, enjoy this first reflection!
About the Author
Agnes Nsofwa is a Global Health Advocate and Consultant specialising in Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and Mental Health. Agnes is the Founder and CEO of Australian Sickle Cell Advocacy Inc (ASCA). ASCA was formed because of Agnes' experience with SCD when their daughter was diagnosed in late 2009. A mother of four children, Agnes changed careers from a Business Profession to become a Registered Nurse to understand SCD and what her daughter was experiencing. Agnes has been nominated and finalist in WEGO Health Awards in 2020 and 2021. Agnes has also been recognised by the Federal Health of Minister in Australia for her work in sickle cell disease awareness. Agnes was featured speaking about her experience in sickle cell disease in the Lancet Haematology Journal and has spoken at different conferences to highlight sickle cell disease. Today Agnes's daughter has been cured from sickle cell disease through Bone Marrow Transplant after moving between three different States in Australia to find a cure.
