En la Antigüedad, mientras los hombres se lanzaban a empresas de exploración y conquista, las mujeres permanecían inmóviles en su hogar. El Medioevo les otorgó una forma de viaje permitido: la peregrinación a los Santos Lugares. Durante el Renacimiento, artistas e intelectuales humanistas viajaron a Italia para tomar contacto con la cultura clásica, anunciando los Grand Tour, las giras educativas por Europa que en el siglo XVIII realizarían los jóvenes aristócratas británicos. Esos itinerarios estaban reservados a los varones, por entonces las mujeres sólo podían desplazarse como acompañantes de sus maridos. Aun desde ese lugar, el viaje les abrió nuevos horizontes. Dejaron de ser espectadoras pasivas de los desplazamientos de otros para convertirse en observadoras de nuevas dimensiones espaciales y emocionales, e incluso en narradoras que exploraban la propia subjetividad: su mirada curiosa empezó a transformarse en literatura de viaje, un género en el que se amalgamaba el propósito testimonial con el registro privado, íntimo, de la autobiografía, el diario o las cartas que reponían la experiencia personal. El momento de cambio en el siglo XIX vino con la descolonización y la creación de nuevos estados, en coincidencia con el surgimiento del feminismo. Las mujeres ya no escribieron recluidas en sus casas o en los conventos, y durante el avance hacia la emancipación civil y política que alcanzarían en la centuria siguiente, reseñar sus viajes fue una manera de apropiarse de ciertos derechos exclusivos de los varones. Accedieron así a la escritura como profesión y, en consecuencia, a la esfera pública. Estas escritoras proyectaron en sus narraciones la imagen que tenían de sí mismas. Como nos muestran las protagonistas de este libro, en cada caso las motivaciones personales enmarcan el relato. Son, en su mayoría, las de la burguesía trotamundos: huir de la realidad cotidiana, ir en busca de aventuras, lograr la realización personal, escoltar al marido. Entre ellas hay una militante anarquista que escapa de la persecución política. Para unas, la Argentina es el punto de partida. Para otras, el lugar de destino. Sus miradas y sus voces son plurales. El viaje las impulsa a recrear el itinerario en la memoria, para escribirlo, para invitarnos a recorrerlo junto a ellas.
