Once Sandy's college friend and writing partner, Todbaum has become something else entirely-a man who's spent the years since "the Arrest" carving his own path through a fractured America. His mode of transport says everything: a nuclear-powered tunnel-digger that speaks to his megalomaniacal persistence. Lethem doesn't waste time explaining what collapsed or how-it's enough that Todbaum survived, thrived, and now stands once again in the siblings' lives like a returning storm.
What unfolds isn't quite post-apocalyptic fiction as we know it. There are no marauding bands or wasteland prophecies here. Instead, Lethem crafts something stranger: a tale about the stories we tell ourselves when the old ones stop working. Todbaum still carries the stink of Hollywood entitlement, but now he's mythic, dangerous, possibly mad. Journeyman must decide whether to confront this relic of a vanished world or simply watch him pass through.
