His mode of transport says everything: a nuclear-powered tunnel-digger that speaks to his megalomaniacal persistence. Lethem doesn't waste time explaining what collapsed or how-it's enough that Todbaum survived, thrived, and now stands once again in the siblings' lives like a returning storm.
What unfolds isn't quite post-apocalyptic fiction as we know it. There are no marauding bands or wasteland prophecies here.
