The Book of Em: The Last Gatekeeper
By Richard Brant
Audiobook Review
This reviewer hereby acknowledges receipt of The Book of Em: The Last Gatekeeper by Richard Brant, an audiobook experience that warrants formal commendation for its compelling narrative structure and character development.
The protagonist, fifteen-year-old Ben, undertakes relocation to an East Coast estate with his mother and stepfather, thereby establishing the foundational premise for supernatural encounter. The author demonstrates considerable skill in juxtaposing mundane familial dysfunction with extraordinary faerie mythology, creating a seamless integration of contemporary realism and fantastical elements.
Creole, identified as a half-breed faerie and designated "Gatekeeper," presents as a multifaceted character whose psychological complexity drives significant narrative momentum. Her mourning process for her deceased father, coupled with substantial anger management issues, establishes authentic emotional stakes that resonate throughout the audiobook experience.
The dialogue excerpt provided demonstrates the author's proficiency in maintaining distinct character voices while advancing plot complications. The exchange between Ben and Creole regarding throat-slitting incidents exemplifies the work's capacity for balancing tension with dark humor, thereby enhancing listener engagement.
Brant's narrative voice exhibits consistent tonal quality throughout the recording, maintaining appropriate pacing for adolescent protagonists while addressing mature themes including alcoholism, loss, and destiny fulfillment. The audiobook format proves particularly effective for conveying the emotional weight of faerie mythology and human vulnerability.
The author's stated objective of restoring "faith in the power of love" through literary means appears substantiated by the work's conclusion, which this reviewer considers a contractual fulfillment of promised emotional impact.
This audiobook merits recommendation for listeners seeking supernatural fiction that maintains psychological authenticity while delivering satisfactory escapist entertainment. The narrative successfully fulfills its obligation to engage auditory senses without compromising literary integrity.
