But this isn't some delicate rescued waif. The moment where he's found drinking blood from a fresh wound while Atilo stands there with dagger in hand... well, let's just say I had to pause the audiobook and collect myself.
What strikes me most is how Grimwood balances the brutal with the beautiful. Venice herself becomes a character - not the romantic gondola-filled postcard version, but something grittier, more real. The Duke's fear of assassins while his own thirteen-year-old cousin gets kidnapped by pirates creates this delicious tension between personal and political stakes.
