The locals are terrified, but Roger's not. He sees a chance for glory, not a threat.
Enter the Wersgorix, an alien species that loves conquering planets, and they're not about to be intimidated by medieval English peasants. They've got their eyes on a "free English" territory, which to them is just another target. But the Wersgorix are pretty clever too. After landing, they find an alien pilot-a Wersgorix who thinks he's the smartest thing on that planet-who decides to use the ship to escape to his home world. So now you've got this half-human, half-alien band of knights who accidentally stumble into interstellar warfare, with the alien traitor leading the way.
What's amazing is how Anderson balances the absurdity with sharp historical details. The medieval knights are all over the place, with their chivalry and their "indomitable will," while the Wersgorix are a mix of alien menace and bureaucratic efficiency. Anderson weaves in the humor-like the Wersgorix trying to use a medieval cannon as a weapon, only to end up blowing up the village.
