Book description
Trapped in a flooded manor with a killer on the loose? Tom Mead's The House at Devil's Neck delivers pure, spine-tingling locked-room perfection-especially as an audiobook. Picture this: Joseph Spector, the brilliant illusionist-sleuth, arrives at the eerie Devil's Neck manor, a former WWI hospital shrouded in ghost stories. But when a sudden flood cuts the causeway, the stranded visitors aren't just dodging phantom soldiers-they're being picked off one by one. The tension isn't just in the plot; it's in the sound of the audiobook: the creak of old floorboards, the relentless drumming of rain on the manor roof, the unsettling silence between murders. You feel that isolation, that dread, in your bones.
And it's not just suspense-it's brilliantly clever. As Joy Ellis puts it, it's "entertaining and fiendishly clever," with twists that leave you gasping. Barbara Nadel calls Mead a "master of the locked-room mystery," and you'll see why: every clue, every red herring, is woven into a puzzle that feels utterly fair yet utterly surprising. Inspector Flint's parallel case adds another layer of intrigue, making the audiobook's pacing feel like a perfectly timed magic trick-each revelation landing just as you think you've solved it.
What elevates this beyond a great mystery is how the audiobook lives in the setting. The narration immerses you in the damp chill of the manor, the hushed panic of the trapped guests, the sharp snap of Spector's deductions. It's the kind of story where you'll pause the book just to savor the atmosphere, then lean in, breathless, as the next victim falls. Victoria Dowd's "ingenious" verdict? Spot on. This isn't just another mystery-it's a masterclass in suspense, delivered with the intimacy of a whispered secret. As Martin Edwards says, it's "what more could any fan of classic crime wish for?" And for audiobook lovers? It's pure, unadulterated magic. Dive into the Spector series-The House at Devil's Neck is the perfect storm of old-school charm and modern, edge-of-your-seat brilliance.
