The Maze - An Audiobook Review
Nelson De Mille's The Maze is a slick, pulse-pounding thriller that feels like a high-speed chase on the audio waves. From the very first moment the narrator-whose voice carries the gravitas of a seasoned detective and the warmth of a long-time friend-dives into John Corey's world, you're pulled into a story that is as gripping as it is complex.
Corey is back in action after a long retirement, and De Mille makes him feel like an old flame returning to a familiar porch. The narrator captures Corey's sarcasm with perfect timing, making his witty one-liners land just where they should. When former lover Beth Penrose drops by with a job offer, the tension rises instantly; the chemistry between them is palpable even without visual cues.
The plot-rooted in the chilling Gilgo Beach murders-unfolds like a labyrinth of clues and red herrings. The audiobook's pacing keeps you on edge: each chapter ends on a cliffhanger that compels you to keep listening. De Mille's signature twists arrive with a satisfying snap, and the narrator's inflection gives them extra weight.
What sets this audio version apart is how it uses sound to build atmosphere. The creaking of wooden planks on the porch, the distant gulls over the beach, and the low hum of a city that never sleeps all weave together to create an immersive backdrop. Even moments of quiet introspection feel vivid because you can almost taste the salt in the air.
The narrator's delivery is consistent and engaging; there are no distracting shifts or uneven pacing. When core scenes-like the discovery of bodies hidden among undergrowth-unfold, the tension is palpable. The subtle use of pauses and emphasis turns each reveal into a moment worth savoring.
If you're a fan of De Mille's John Corey saga, The Maze delivers on all fronts: sharp dialogue, a compelling mystery, and that "smart, entertaining suspense" that keeps readers-and listeners-on their toes. The audiobook is a masterclass in how to bring a page-turner alive through voice alone.
In short, The Maze is a thrilling audio adventure that will leave you breathless, eager for the next chapter, and convinced that De Mille still reigns supreme in the world of suspense.
