Book description
Gibson's The Peripheral serves up two timelines like a dystopian buffet-plenty of options, but you're still stuck with the same grim future no matter which plate you choose. Our heroine Flynne resides in a backwoods hellscape where the economy runs on 3D-printed drugs and veteran disability checks, while her brother Burton moonlights in what he claims is a harmless virtual reality game. Spoiler: it's not.
Meanwhile, in London circa 2070-something, Wilf Netherton floats through a world of celebrity management and historical tourism, treating nostalgia like a hobbyhorse while the masses have been conveniently winnowed down to manageable numbers. It's essentially Downton Abbey meets Mad Max, if the Crawleys had drones and the Maxx had better hair.
The plot kicks into gear when Flynne witnesses a murder in her brother's "game," which turns out to be a window into the future. Suddenly she's neck-deep in conspiracy, and Wilf discovers that country bumpkins from the past can outmaneuver his tech-savvy contemporaries with alarming ease. Gibson's prose remains sharp as ever, slicing through technological mumbo-jumbo with the precision of a seasoned cynic.
This audiobook delivers Gibson's signature blend of technological paranoia and social commentary, narrated with just the right amount of world-weary skepticism. The author who coined "cyberspace" proves he's still got the chops to make us paranoid about our digital future, even when that future involves time travel and peripheral murder mysteries. A solid entry point for newcomers to Gibson's later work, though veterans might find it slightly less mind-bending than Neuromancer. Still, when your competition is mostly other authors trying to copy your own innovations, being slightly less revolutionary is still pretty revolutionary.
