Gibson's The Peripheral serves up two timelines like a dystopian buffet-plenty of options, but you're still stuck with the same grim future no matter which plate you choose. It's essentially Downton Abbey meets Mad Max, if the Crawleys had drones and the Maxx had better hair.
The plot kicks into gear when Flynne witnesses a murder in her brother's "game," which turns out to be a window into the future. Suddenly she's neck-deep in conspiracy, and Wilf discovers that country bumpkins from the past can outmaneuver his tech-savvy contemporaries with alarming ease. Gibson's prose remains sharp as ever, slicing through technological mumbo-jumbo with the precision of a seasoned cynic.
