Gillian O'Rourke does such an incredible job of making Esther feel real and relatable, even though she's living in this completely different fantasy world.
What really got me was how Esther goes from this simple peasant girl to suddenly being surrounded by all these power-hungry nobles who want to use her gift for their own gain. It's like she can't catch a break! And then there's this mysterious "dark man" from her father's warnings - cue the dramatic music in my head while listening.
The narrator's voice work is absolutely perfect for this story. They capture Esther's confusion and fear so well, especially when she realizes she's been betrayed by the very people who were supposed to protect her. There were moments where I actually had to pause the audiobook just to process what was happening.
I love how this isn't just another fantasy story about saving the world - it's more personal than that.
