Book description
The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: A Gentle Rebellion Against Modern Madness
John Mark Comer's new book feels like a quiet, wise friend telling us that our lives have been running on too fast a treadmill. In a world where "hurry" is worshiped as productivity and success, Comer offers a counter-culture manifesto that is both prophetic and practical-exactly the kind of antidote that readers who feel drained by constant busyness need.
From the outset, the book's tone is approachable yet urgent. The author draws on his own experience: "Who am I becoming?" he asks himself after years of outward success but inward emptiness. His mentor's blunt advice-to ruthlessly eliminate hurry-becomes a turning point that redefines the rest of the narrative. That moment alone sets the book apart from other self-help titles that often preach vague concepts like "balance" or "mindfulness." Comer goes straight to the root cause and offers tangible steps to uproot it.
The structure is clear and engaging. Each chapter tackles a specific facet of hurry-time management, digital distraction, cultural expectations-and then presents simple, actionable practices. He blends Scripture with everyday wisdom in a way that feels fresh rather than preachy. The inclusion of real stories from pastors, teachers, and ordinary people grounds the ideas and shows that they work across contexts.
What makes this book especially compelling is its emotional honesty. Comer does not shy away from admitting how "busyness" can feel like an addiction, how it erodes relationships and spiritual health. He invites readers to reclaim their time as a sacred act of self-care, framing it as a form of worship rather than mere efficiency.
Critics have praised the book's life-giving approach. Jon Tyson calls it "prophetic, practical, and profoundly life giving," while the Church of the City's lead pastor notes that Comer "provides a way forward that creates hope, hunger, and a vision of a beautiful life." Those endorsements capture the core of Comer's message: slowing down is not weakness but radical self-respect.
In sum, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry is a must-read for anyone who feels pulled in too many directions. It offers a roadmap that is both grounded in faith and deeply relevant to modern stressors. By inviting us to step back, breathe, and prioritize what truly matters, Comer reminds us that emotional health and spiritual vitality are not luxuries-they're necessities that can be reclaimed when we dare to slow down.
