As a bladesmith who can literally enchant metal with magic (take that, Etsy artisans), she's used to nobles wanting her services-but not her hand in marriage. Too bad the crown prince has other plans, none of which involve actual romance.
Enter Roshan, the bastard brother with bedroom eyes and a talent for complicating plot lines. He's supposed to be helping his royal sibling find a bride, except the whole thing turns out to be less "Bachelor" and more "hunted magical girl with a dark god problem."
The audiobook narrator deserves a medal for keeping up with Howard's breakneck pacing. Just when you think you've figured out the love triangle, someone transforms into something shiny and dangerous, or ancient prophecies start making uncomfortable amounts of sense. The romance crackles with enough sexual tension to power a small village, while the action sequences will have you white-knuckling your steering wheel during commute hours.
Howard's world-building strikes that perfect balance between familiar fantasy tropes and genuinely surprising twists. Magic systems actually make sense, characters bleed when stabbed, and the political intrigue feels less like homework and more like eavesdropping on royals behaving badly.
