Our protagonist enters the Catenan Academy under an assumed identity, carrying the weight of his family's execution and a mission that could topple the entire Republic. The tension builds masterfully as he must navigate the treacherous social hierarchy while searching for answers about a murder and an ancient weapon. What struck me most was how Islington crafts this delicate balance between the character's dual existence-publicly playing the part of a loyal student while privately plotting revolution.
The audiobook format really brings out the internal struggle of our hero. The narration captures his growing friendships genuinely, making the pretense of his deception all the more painful. When he tells us he'll "never, ever cede his Will to the empire," you feel the fierce determination beneath his carefully constructed facade.
Islington's world-building shines through the political intrigue and academic setting. The concept of "Will" being literally leeched from citizens adds a unique layer to the typical fantasy power dynamics. The Hierarchy's control feels both fantastical and eerily familiar.
