El 26 de octubre de 1984 se emitió un reportaje de siete minutos en la BBC con imágenes dantescas de la hambruna que azotaba el norte de Etiopía, en la que terminaron pereciendo un millón de personas. El documental dio la vuelta al mundo, sacudiendo las conciencias de todo Occidente. La catástrofe humanitaria, focalizada en el campo de refugiados de Korem, tuvo una repercusión mediática sin precedentes y generó una extraordinaria ola de solidaridad, con donaciones que desbordaron cualquier previsión. La implicación de los medios de comunicación, de las ONG y de las grandes estrellas del pop y el rock acabaron fraguando el primer paso para un cambio de paradigma en la cobertura y la gestión de las crisis humanitarias, muy limitadas, hasta entonces, a las misiones cristianas y a la pura beneficencia. También se inició un debate ético en el ámbito de la cooperación internacional que, treinta y cinco años después, todavía sigue vivo. En la novela, Yohanes Abel es un niño etíope que hace de la supervivencia un arte, experimentando, en toda su plenitud, el infierno y la esperanza. A lo largo de los años el chico, ya adulto, sufrirá una transformación paralela a los acontecimientos que se irán sucediendo en el país y a la influencia de diversos personajes europeos que se cruzarán en su camino: un periodista, una chica del extrarradio de Barcelona, un misionero, cooperantes franceses de Médicos sin Fronteras...En la senda del hambre nos sitúa en el epicentro de la hambruna de Etiopía de mediados de los ochenta y principios de los noventa, con conexiones en Barcelona, Nueva York, París y Milán. Con una documentada base histórica de fondo, la novela también pone de relieve, a través de testimonios y vivencias ficticias, las grandes contradicciones de la ayuda humanitaria y la cooperación internacional.
