Then there's Carlyle Foster, a sensayer, which is basically a spiritual counselor. Religion is outlawed in public, but people still need that inner support, so Carlyle works in that gray zone.
What's crazy is the world itself. Palmer paints a society that looks as alien to us as we would look at a 1500s town. Technology has delivered enough abundance that everyone can get what they need, but the social structure is incredibly complex. Every public speech or writing gets a mandatory label, so you can't just say anything you want. Even the normal gender categories we're used to are considered taboo in most situations. The majority of the population lives in massive, globe-wide clans that compete in culture and economics, but their competition is carefully planned by central planners who keep everything under control. It feels like a weird mix of utopia and strict governance, and the way Palmer shows it feels both normal and extraordinary to the inhabitants.
Then Mycroft and Carlyle run into Bridger, a boy who can make his wishes come true. He can literally animate objects, so the system's balance is at stake. That little twist turns the whole story into a real question about what happens when the rules you've built crumble.
