Tara Westover nació en Idaho en 1986. Inició sus estudios en la Brigham Young University con diecisiete años y se graduó en Arte en 2008. Gracias a varias becas pudo seguir estudiando y obtuvo un posgrado en el Trinity College, Cambridge, en 2009. Consiguió una maestría en Filosofía y se graduó en Historia en 2014, después de una estancia en la universidad de Harvard. Actualmente reside en Londres.
