Book description
Imagine hearing a scholar's voice not just explaining translation, but living it in real time-this is what makes Rita Kothari's Uneasy Translations such a revelatory audiobook. As you listen, her words feel like a quiet revolution: she doesn't just study language, she inhabits its messy, political, and deeply personal spaces. You'll hear her trace the weight of a Hindi film song lyric, the unspoken tension in a classroom, the way caste and gender shape even a single word. What's brilliant is how she frames translation not as perfect copying, but as an ongoing, imperfect act-anuvaad, "saying it after," not for or instead. It's risky, human, and utterly compelling.
Kothari's voice carries both the warmth of shared stories and the sharpness of a scholar asking, Why do we teach English as if it's the only way to know? She weaves her own journey-teaching, being a woman, navigating multilingual India-with intimate examples: the shame in a family silence, the democracy of a village text, the quiet rebellion in choosing "Hindi" over "Indian" in a song. You don't just hear ideas; you feel the rhythm of her thinking, the pauses where she lets a moment breathe. The audiobook's power lies in this duality: it's rigorously intellectual yet deeply tender, like a conversation over tea where profound truths slip in between laughter and silence.
What stays with you isn't just the theories, but the how-how she shows translation as a daily act of care, not just a linguistic one. When she writes about "the illegetibility of shame," you hear the ache in her voice; when she celebrates "bhasha texts" on their own terms, it's a quiet triumph. This isn't a book to consume-it's to live with. By the end, you'll catch yourself listening differently: to the unspoken in a friend's words, the history in a street sign, the way language itself is always unfinished. Kothari doesn't offer answers; she hands you a mirror and says, Look again. And in this age of noise, that's a gift. You'll hear your own language, and your own life, transformed.
