Book description
Picture this: you move into a gorgeous San Francisco apartment, only to discover your neighbor's nocturnal activities are louder than your morning coffee grinder. Not just loud-thumping. Like a bass drum solo played by a guy who clearly skipped the "quiet hours" memo. Enter Caroline, currently on a self-imposed dating hiatus, forced to listen to her neighbor's "athletic prowess" through walls thinner than her patience. And yes, it's that kind of neighbor. You know the one-the one who makes your own love life feel like a silent movie by comparison.
Alice Clayton (yes, the same author who swapped cosmetics counters for laptop keyboards and finally convinced her boyfriend to pop the question-and her Bernese Mountain dog is apparently part of the wedding party) delivers a riotous rom-com where the walls are literally the star. Caroline, clad in a pink baby-doll nightie and pure, unfiltered frustration, finally confronts the mysterious Simon Parker. What follows isn't just awkward-it's deliciously messy. The tension? Thick enough to spread on toast. The humor? As sharp as Caroline's growing list of "Why is this man not my problem?" questions.
Let's be real: the premise is gloriously absurd. You've got a woman whose only romantic inspiration is the sound of her neighbor's bedroom antics, and she's not even dating. Clayton nails that perfect blend of "oh my god, this is so embarrassing" and "wait, is this actually happening to me?" It's the kind of book where you'll snort-laugh at 2 a.m. while simultaneously whispering, "Yes, please keep banging that wall, Simon." The audiobook? Pure magic. The narrator leans into every cringe, every awkward pause, every "oh, that's why the wall shook," with perfect comedic timing. You hear Caroline's internal monologue-part exasperation, part "I'm judging you but also kinda intrigued"-and it's impossible not to smile.
Clayton's background in cosmetics (yes, she once sold lip gloss for a living) shines through in her razor-sharp observations. She doesn't just write about relationships; she dissects the tiny, hilarious moments that make them real. Like Caroline realizing her neighbor's "endless parade of women" might actually be one woman who just really, really likes the wall. Or the way Simon's voice, when he finally speaks, is as smooth as his "athletic" reputation is... well, overstated. (Spoiler: he's not a superhero. He's just really into his own bed.)
This isn't just another rom-com. It's a celebration of the ridiculous, relatable chaos of modern dating-and the fact that sometimes, your biggest problem is the guy next door who definitely knows how to work his bed. Clayton's voice is warm, witty, and utterly unapologetic about leaning into the absurd. You'll finish the audiobook convinced that Simon Parker is the neighbor you've always wanted to accidentally catch mid-"activity" with. And honestly? You'll be quietly hoping the next book in the series involves a lot more wallbanging. Because let's face it: life's too short for boring neighbors. And boring audiobooks. This one? It's the perfect mix of silly, steamy, and utterly unputdownable. Just... maybe keep the volume low when you're listening in public. You know, for everyone's sake.
