Hafsah Faizal's debut audiobook delivers exactly what the marketing copy promises: a quest narrative so formulaic you could set your watch to it. Our intrepid heroine Zafira hunts demons in drag while our brooding prince Nasir broods more effectively than a teenager who discovered poetry. How refreshing.
The author seems to have raided the YA fantasy bargain bin: take one cursed forest, add mysterious artifacts, sprinkle liberally with ancient evils, and voilà-three hundred pages of predictable adventure. The narrator dutifully delivers death threats and romantic tension with the enthusiasm of someone reading a grocery list, which somehow feels appropriate given the material.
Zafira's cross-dressing routine would be more impressive if we hadn't seen it approximately seventeen thousand times before, and Nasir's internal struggle between filial duty and basic human decency lacks the nuance of a soap opera. Their inevitable romance blooms with all the subtlety of a billboard advertisement.
But here's the real magic trick: Faizal manages to make ancient evils seem boring. That's quite an achievement. The Arz forest creeps across the landscape with all the menace of a particularly slow-moving fog machine, and the supposedly world-ending artifact feels about as threatening as a slightly overcooked dinner.
The audiobook format does little to elevate proceedings, though at least the narrator's performance provides a consistent backdrop of mild disappointment that matches the material perfectly. If you enjoy your fantasy served lukewarm with a side of déjà vu, this desert safari might be your cup of tea. Or rather, your cup of sand.
