Benito Torrentera es un cincuentón dedicado en cuerpo y alma a la filosofía, hasta que se cruza en su camino Flor Eduarda, una jovencita de pasiones salvajes que lo hace desatinar y rebelarse contra la desidia que aplasta su vida. Ante la presencia constante e inexplicable de la chica en su departamento, Torrentera investiga un poco y descubre que ella posiblemente haya matado, quizá por accidente, a su compañero de la tienda donde trabajaba. Así, decide ayudarle a huir de la policía, ocultarla, incluso conseguirle papeles falsos, y llevarla en un viaje por carretera. Su destino final es el pueblo Michoacano de Tiripetío, donde en 1540, Fray Alonso de la Vera Cruz impartió la primera cátedra de filosofía en el nuevo mundo (un destino simbólico, pues los conduce a una utopía imposible de alcanzar, agotada ya, de esplendor sucedido, como la juventud y la pasión del protagonista). Pero las cosas tenderán a salirse de control, y Torrentera terminará en la cárcel, desde donde nos cuenta su historia, así como la manera en que sus sueños de una vida más intensa terminaron en la basura.Lodo fue distinguida con el Premio Nacional de Narrativa Colima 2002, que otorga el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes a obra publicada, y fue finalista del Premio Rómulo Gallegos 2003. Por todo ello, la recuperación de Lodo, una de las mejores novelas mexicanas (y latinoamericanas) de la década, es sin duda un gran acontecimiento literario.\
