Okay, so let me tell you about this absolute gem I just finished listening to - Wolf Worm by T. Kingfisher. First off, can we talk about how brilliant it is that this is the same person who writes children's books? Like, what a range!
The audiobook grabbed me from the very first minute. You've got Sonia Wilson, this incredibly talented scientific illustrator stuck in 1899 with no work and basically no hope. When creepy Dr. Halder offers her a job illustrating his insect collection, she figures, why not? Worst case, it's just bugs, right?
Wrong. So very wrong.
What I loved about this listening experience was how the narrator absolutely nailed that gothic atmosphere. You could practically feel the Carolina woods closing in around you. The way Sonia slowly realizes something's seriously off about this house - the weird animal behavior, the local gossip about "blood thiefs," and then discovering what happened to Halder's previous assistant (yikes) - it all unfolds so perfectly.
The horror builds gradually, which made me keep thinking "just one more chapter" until suddenly it's 2 AM and I've been sitting in my car for twenty minutes because I couldn't stop listening. Kingfisher knows exactly when to twist that knife, and boy does she ever.
Seriously, if you're into gothic horror with fantastic female characters and the kind of creepy that makes you check your skin for things that shouldn't be there, this audiobook is absolutely worth your time. Just maybe listen to it somewhere you can pause easily - you're gonna need breaks to recover from those twists.
