Book description
Works of Love: A New Translation - a lyrical revival of Kierkegaard's quiet gospel
Bruce H. Kirmmse has long been hailed as one of the finest translators of Søren Kierkegaard, and his latest work-Works of Love-confirms that reputation with flying colors. Where earlier editions struggled to capture the rhythm and urgency of Kierkegaard's prose, Kirmmse brings a fresh vitality that feels both faithful to the original Danish and resonant for today's readers.
The book itself is a collection of two sets of "deliberations." The first wrestles with love as duty; the second turns to its practical applications. Throughout, Kierkegaard contrasts the fleeting passions of romantic affection with the enduring, self-sacrificing love he calls agape. He argues that true love must be directed toward one's neighbor as one's own self-an idea that feels startlingly modern in a world still obsessed with individualism.
What sets this translation apart is Kirmmse's insistence on hearing the text. Kierkegaard famously urged readers to read aloud, and Kirmmse preserves that call by rendering the language in a cadence that invites vocal reading. Listening to his version transforms the work from a dense philosophical treatise into an almost sermonic experience, echoing Kierkegaard's own desire for his words to "sting" rather than merely convince.
The introduction is both scholarly and accessible, laying out the historical context without bogging down the reader. It frames Works of Love as a spiritual exercise: not a doctrinal textbook but a call to awaken inner conscience. This framing makes the book approachable for anyone-whether steeped in Kierkegaard or encountering him for the first time.
In sum, Kirmmse's translation does more than simply render words; it restores the performative power of Kierkegaard's thought. It invites us to read aloud, to feel the pulse of his argument, and to consider whether we truly love our neighbors as ourselves. For those who seek a text that is both intellectually rigorous and emotionally compelling, this new edition promises to become a staple on any thoughtful shelf.
