Book description
The scent of damp earth and jasmine clings to every page of Cemetery Boys, and the audiobook makes it feel like it's whispering right into your ear. Aiden Thomas doesn't just tell a story about a non-binary brujo summoning a ghost-he makes you feel the cool, damp grass beneath Yadriel's bare feet as he performs the ritual, hear the nervous tremor in his voice as he calls out his cousin's name, and smell the faint, lingering trace of cinnamon on the breeze when Julian Diaz materializes, all sharp angles and stubborn defiance. The narrator's voice-warm, effortlessly cool, with just the right edge of teenage uncertainty-pulls you right into Yadriel's skin, making every heartbeat, every hesitant touch with Julian, feel like a physical thing. You hear the city hum outside the cemetery gates, you feel the unsettling chill of Julian's ghostly presence as he flickers in and out of focus, his voice a low murmur that cuts through the silence. Thomas weaves Latinx traditions into the very fabric of the story-not as backdrop, but as living, breathing magic, from the intricate details of the ritual to the weight of family expectations that shape Yadriel's choices. The slow burn between Yadriel and Julian isn't just romance; it's a quiet revolution. You feel the tension coil in the air when Julian leans in, the way his ghostly hand might brush Yadriel's wrist, the way their conversations, laced with humor and shared grief, slowly unravel the walls they've built. It's a story about finding your place, your truth, and the terrifying, beautiful risk of falling for someone who sees you, not just the brujo you want to be, but the person you are. The murder mystery threads through it all-a puzzle of secrets and lies that pulls you deeper into the city's shadows. And when the final whisper of the story fades, you're left with the lingering warmth of a promise kept, the echo of a love letter written in moonlight and courage. This isn't just a great book; it's a necessary, radiant heartbeat in the world of queer fantasy, made even richer by the intimacy of the audiobook. You don't just read it-you feel it, breathe it, and carry its quiet magic long after the last word fades.
